Updated: Jan 21

Vegan Rainbow Burger

What made you decide to go vegan? Post holiday wellbeing? Concern over animal welfare? or just a need to make more eco-friendly choices?

What with the current climate crisis and zero waste at the forefront of all our minds, there was never a better time to Veganize your lifestyle.

We are all aware from the press and TV shows, that a vegan diet can give amazing health benefits, is good for the environment and helps to protects our animals, and each year hundreds of thousands of people pledge to switch to veganism, an amazing 350,000 so far to date.

Remember though that your skin (the body’s largest organ) can absorb practically everything you put on it; so to compliment your gut this Veganuary - make January the month to Veganize your skincare too!

Scrutinise your skin care labels and get rid of any plastic tucked away in your bathrooms!

SKINCARE BENEFITS OF VEGANUARY

VEGANISM is a healthy and ethical lifestyle choice which can support the health of your skin in several ways, you may notice the following benefits:

CLEARER SKIN AND NO SPOTS!

As dairy consumption has long been associated with acne and inflammation , swapping it out for plant-based alternatives may be really beneficial if you suffer from sore or painful acne or spots.

A HEALTHY GLOW FROM ALL THE ANTIOXIDANTS

Leafy greens, fruits, nuts, flax & chia seed are all rich in antioxidant vitamins and minerals. Consuming more of these as part of a plant-based diet will most definitely boost your antioxidant intake thus helping to keep your skin clear, healthy & balanced.

A GOOD pH-BALANCE

Plant-based food groups are usually more alkaline than both eggs & meat. So it makes sense that by consuming a plant based diet you can help balance your body’s pH balance, this in turn supports the health of your skin and hair - from the inside out.

As we are all becoming increasingly aware of the environmental footprint we are leaving, consumers are demanding more transparency, authenticity and sustainability when it comes to their beauty routines and the products they use.

At 360 Botanics we strongly believe, and stand by the mantra that ‘LESS IS MORE’, by only including powerful, & most importantly botanical ingredients from nature in all of our products, we try and reduce our footprint wherever we can.

Why not give them a go? Try out some of our lovely Plant Based products this month, your skin will thank you for it!

Below we list the 6 most common dangerous chemicals found in many skincare products on the shelves of our favourite shops:

PARABENS

These are cheap preservatives used in a wide range of cosmetic products. They prevent bacteria, mold, fungus, and even parasites from growing. Almost 60% of all cosmetic products contain parabens. There are a few major concerns with parabens: Studies show that these chemicals can be absorbed through our skin and into our bloodstream where they then stay and pile up. They mimic estrogen in the body and may disrupt our natural hormonal balance. There may be a link between paraben exposure and breast cancer. This is not certain, but existing research is enough to prompt changes in consumer cosmetic choices.

There are many alternatives to parabens which are safe and just as effective!

Best Alternatives: Vitamin E, rosemary, grapefruit seed extract, fermented radish root, and antioxidant oils such as almond, avocado, and hemp seed oil.

FRAGRANCE OR PARFUM

These factor in nearly 50% of all cosmetic products. These blends of aromatics, which give beauty products their trademark scents, are often chemical cocktails. “Fragrance” is essentially a term for “secret ingredients”. The problem is that the law does not require companies to tell consumers what is actually in these secret “blends”. It's impossible to know what any blend is actually made of.

The best natural alternative is either choosing 'Fragrance Free' products or ones containing only 100% pure essential oils.

PHTHALATES

These are a group of chemicals used to make products more fluid and less dry. You can find these in products like nail polish, detergents, shampoos, creams, and moisturisers. Studies have linked these to male and female reproductive defects, asthma, ADHD, breast cancer, and even diabetes. Avoid these nasties when possible! A major problem is that ‘fragrance’ or ‘parfum’ could includes phthalates, making them impossible to identify on the product label. The best way to avoid phthalates is to avoid products that contain synthetic fragrance and ones that come in cheap plastic packaging.

Best natural alternatives: Go for glass containers and 100% pure essential oils.

PROPYLENE GLYCOL

This ingredient is in a variety of liquid skincare products, as well as in antifreeze, brake fluid, and paints - YUK! It may allow harmful chemicals to penetrate further into your skin and bloodstream than they could otherwise do on their own. It has also been linked to skin irritation. Whilst it can prevent moisture loss by creating a seal over your skin it can also dry your skin out by drawing up moisture from the deep tissue layers, not good…

The best natural alternative is vegetable glycerin - Yay!

PETROLEUM & MINERAL OILS

Used in skincare products for many reasons, petrochemicals have been linked to major health concerns. Petroleum-based products can be contaminated with dozens of toxic chemicals, some known to cause cancer and damage nerves. Petroleum-based ingredients can also penetrate the skin, causing further health hazards. A recent study showed that using mineral oil products has the potential to increase the rate of tutor growth.

Best natural alternatives: vegetable glycerin, coconut oil, sunflower oil, olive oil & shea butter.

SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE

SLS is one of the most common ingredients used in shampoos, soaps, body washes, and just about anything that creates a foam. The ingredient itself is not the biggest health concern, it’s the harmful contaminants created during the manufacturing process, these includes possible chemicals that may cause kidney and liver defects.

Best natural alternatives: SLS-free formulations, foam-free natural products, saponified carrier oils or castile soaps (such as coconut, olive oil, and sunflower oils).
